Expanding with Flexibility!

As you may know, Nia promises a whole-body workout that conditions body, mind, emotions and spirit by activating what we call, “The Five Sensations of Fitness” or FAMSS which include:

  • Flexibility
  • Agility
  • Mobility
  • Strength
  • Stability
To be considered physically fit and respond effectively to the demands of our daily lives, Nia teaches that we must cultivate all five of these sensations. Over the next five weeks, I’ll be sharing a little bit about each of these five sensations.

Today I’m focusing on developing FLEXIBILITY.

Flexibility can be sensed in the body as energy moving outward. It is the physical feeling of lengthening, opening and releasing. When you sense flexibility, you might experience a feeling of spaciousness and expansion in and around your joints, as well as along your muscles.

Flexibility is the result of increased elasticity throughout your connective tissue and muscular system. It is nourished and maintained by actively opening and closing your joints to their fullest comfortable range of motion, while sustaining an active and dynamic flow of energy along the bones.

Losing flexibility is often sensed as heaviness, rigidity, pain, stiffness, cramping or fatigue, with diminished balance, grace or coordination. Increasing your flexibility can help prevent injury and support increased range of motion. It also helps keep your muscles and connective tissue healthy and adaptive to change.

Flexibility gives you the ability to expand into life and radiate energy outward, discovering our full potential – both on and off the dance floor.

Ask yourself, “How much flexibility do I currently sense in my body, and where could I develop more flexibility in order to achieve greater ease and responsiveness to daily challenges?”

Join us on the dance floor to find new ways you can foster increased flexibility in body, mind, spirit and emotions in your workouts, and in life!
